建国初期，只懂科研不懂生活的“傻子”物理学家王怀民留苏归国后不久，妻子就因难产而亡，妇科医生杨佳蓉主动承担起照顾新生儿的责任。1958年二机部九所成立后，王怀民与科学家彭雄飞、黄凯华等人加入九所开始了原子弹研发工作。他们在研发过程中渡过了研发条件艰苦、自然灾害、中苏关系破裂等重重危机。同时，军人陶志纲带领着军队在罗布泊无人区中建立起试验基地。解决了设计方案、浓缩铀提炼等难题后，科学家们自主研发的原子弹终在1964年成功引爆。可是王怀民却因为长年艰苦工作和核辐射患上癌症，在生命的最后，王怀民终于明白生活的真谛，与杨佳蓉结为夫妻。。A Japanese ghost story adapted from Hearn's "Yuki-Onna"(Kwaidan). Two woodcutters, an old man and his young apprentice, Minokichi get trapped in a snowstorm in the forest and take refuge in a hut.
